The Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) and its chartered Component Parish Societies are a unified membership. Membership in both socieities is required, and a physician may choose basic Component Parish Society membership either in the parish in whose jurisdiction that he/she maintains their principle office or in the parish in whose jurisdiction he/she maintains their residence. Residents, Fellows and Medical Students may choose any Component Parish Society having a membership category for the type of membership he/she is requesting.

Member Benefits

Professional Advocacy
Since 1975 lobbyists in the Department of Governmental Affairs have fought to keep the malpractice cap (Act 817) in place. They provide LSMS members legislative and governmental advocacy, act as a liaison between physicians and lawmakers, and regularly interact with state regulatory agencies. Representation on many state boards, committees and tasks forces within government is also provided to members.

Legal Activities & Support
The Department of Legal Affairs provides LSMS members a resource for legal information and guidance, coordinates legal activities to benefit the membership, and acts as a liaison to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Ongoing legal support continues to be provided to the membership after having joined class action lawsuits filed in Louisiana state court against four of the largest health plans in the state. Aetna and CIGNA have agreed to a settlement. Specific information about these settlements is available on the LSMS website in the Members Only section.

Public Affairs
The Department of Public Affairs provides media relations and communications on behalf of physicians and patients, presents a positive image of the profession with the media and the public, and works with statewide media to address healthcare issues from the physician's perspective. It also produces the publications listed below, keep LSMS members abreast of the latest information on professional issues.

Medical School Scholarships
altThe LSMS Educational & Research Foundation is responsible for the P. H. Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to needy medical students attending Louisiana medical schools.

Products & Services
altInsurance products, human resource and communication services, educational events and discounts on car rental and leasing are available to the membership through LSMS Physicians Services, Inc.

Residents, Fellows and Medical Students may choose any Component Parish Society having a membership category for the type of membership he/she is requesting.

A member of the Louisiana State Medical Society:

  • Must be a Doctor of Medicine, a Doctor of Osteopathy, or a medical student in a medical school in Louisiana, which has been approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education
  • Must be licensed to practice medicine by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME)
  • Must be of good ethical and moral character
  • Must be a member in good standing of a Component Parish Society


Categories of Membership

Academic
A physician who is predominantly engaged in teaching, administration, or research in an approved medical school.

Active
A Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy who is licensed to practice medicine by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME) and who practices medicine full time.

Active Part-Time
A Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy who is licensed to practice medicine by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME)  and who practices medicine for a maximum of twenty (20) hours per week.

Affiliate
A physician who is a member of a chartered, national medical society of a foreign country, or an American physician who is a Louisiana resident located in a foreign country. Affiliate members need not be licensed to practice medicine in the state of Louisiana.

Associate
A fully retired who physician who held an unrestricted license to practice medicine in another state at retirement, and has since moved to Louisiana.

Corresponding
A physician who has been a member of the LSMS, and is now residing in another state. Corresponding members must remain licensed to practice medicine in the state of Louisiana.

Medical Student
A student who is in good standing with a medical school in Louisiana approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

Resident
A  physician that is serving an internship or residency in a Louisiana hospital approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association.

Service
A physician who is a member of a branch of the United States Military, the United States Public Health Service, the United States Coast Guard, or the Veterans Administration. Service members need not be licensed to practice medicine in the state of Louisiana.

Please note:

  • With the exception of Service, Affiliate, and Corresponding members, all members must be a member in good standing of a component parish society.
