BATON ROUGE, LA—The Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) urges physicians and residents in Louisiana to prepare for the potential threat of severe weather in the coming week.

Each year, Louisiana witnesses the devastating impacts hurricanes can cause. Hurricanes are not just a threat to coastal communities. High winds, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flooding can be felt hundreds of miles inland, potentially causing loss of life and catastrophic damage to property.

All major weather events such as Hurricane Harvey have the ability to cause significant damage. The severity of the storm has been upgraded. It is expected to cause heavy rain and possibly flooding in parts of Louisiana. There is also a chance that it could hit Louisiana after it leaves Texas.

“We urge physicians and health care providers in the state to take steps necessary to prepare their homes and clinics as instructed by the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness,” said LSMS CEO and Executive Vice-President Jeff Williams.
