The Louisiana State Medical Society's (LSMS) Medical Student Section (MSS) was established to serve as a unified voice for students in the state. The MSS is represented by a Governing Council (GC), which represents five medical schools in Louisiana:

  • LSUHSC Shreveport
  • LSU Health New Orleans
  • Tulane University School of Medicine
  • University of Queensland Ochsner Clinical School
  • Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine

The MSS participates at the local, state, and national levels. Involvement is attainable through participation on the GC via school chapters serving on various LSMS committees, the Board of Governors and nationally through the Louisiana Delegation to the American Medical Association.

The purpose of the LSMS-MSS is to:

  • Advocate for medical students training in Louisiana
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and education on issues related to health policy
  • Facilitate programs and services to help educate medical students on the professional aspects of medicine, organization students to write resolutions and to the LSMS and its policies
  • Maintain regular communication with medical students within the state

The current MSS Chair is Maria Keerigan, who can be reached at mrk001@lsuhs.edu.

In the physician realm, over 25,000 medical school graduates enter training annually in the US. Most of these newly-minted doctors begin their residencies with over $200,000 in federal student loan debt with an average interest rate of over 6%. Medical training can last anywhere from three to eight years with an average salary starting around $60,000.
